Mindfulness begins with awareness, focus, and acceptance. When employees can let go of distractions, their performance will improve, and the bottom line will benefit.
The challenge is that distractions are here to stay. Whether it’s chatty colleagues or email notifications, intrusions lurk everywhere. The distraction cost is wasted time and increased employee stress with tight deadlines, long working days and difficult conversations.
Gloria Mark, a professor from the University of California, Irvine who has studied interruptions, says, “it takes an average of 23 minutes and 15 seconds to get back to the task.”

Learning to Focus on One Thing
We all let our minds wander, contemplating the future, dwelling on the past, fantasising, fretting, or daydreaming. Being mindful of these distractions can bring us back to the present moment and provide us with the tools we need to be less stressed, calmer, and kinder to ourselves and others.
Being mindful of paying attention to the present moment without judgement – is a simple practice that anyone can practice.
An excellent practice to learn how to refocus one’s mind on the present moment is learning how to meditate — to focus one’s mind for a while on one thing.
Irene Kraegel, the author of A Mindful Moment, says, “The goal of mindfulness is not to stop thinking or empty the mind.” Instead, the point of mindfulness is to pay close attention to your physical sensations, thoughts, and emotions to see them more clearly without making assumptions or making up stories.
“I think of mindfulness as the ability not to be drawn away from around by your own emotions,” says Dan Harris, the author of “10 Percent Happier.” “That can have a big impact on how you are in the workplace.”
Workplace mindfulness and employee wellbeing can be cultivated by encouraging breaks and exercise during work and planning purposeful pauses throughout the day. However, the most reliable way is simple: meditate.
Reducing Stress at Work
Using mindfulness at work can significantly reduce stress and improve employee wellbeing. Unfortunately, the workplace is becoming more stressful, with email, intra-office chat tools, and social media constantly competing for attention and time allocated to finish tasks.
